History

This place was built in 1932 as Carpenter’s Camp on the then well-travelled Route 66.

Husband and wife, Fred and Margaret Carpenter, bought the camp in 1936 and opened a Skelley gas station with a café. They sold it to W.E. and Florence Onstott in 1939, who renamed it “Oak Vale Park.” They switched to Sinclair gasoline (remember Dino the dinosaur?) and added picnic grounds and several cabins. Over the following years, the property changed hands several times. It closed in 1952, and the gas station/cafe was converted into a private residence in 1957.
