Family History
This handsome home was the residence of the Hutton family for at least four decades. For some reason it always tickles me when a family has enjoyed their home for so many years. It gives me hope that a new owner, realizing a property’s history and how well loved a home once was, will be encouraged to become a good steward of that home.
Leonard F. Hutton (1906-1963) purchased this Tudor Revival for his family in 1936. Leonard was a cost clerk for Delco Corporation, an automobile electronics design and manufacturing company. He worked hard to maintain this house for his family, which included his wife Mildred Eva (1908 – 1997) and daughter Dorothy. After Leonard’s death at the age of 57, Mildred and Dorothy continued to live in the home. Per the 1940US Census, the home was valued at $5,000 that year. Once upon a time there was a tree in the front yard, but in January 1959 a woman’s car skidded on ice crashing into the Hutton’s yard and plowing down the tree. In 1975, Mildred failed to stop at a stop sign and a bus rammed into her. I guess what goes around comes around, because Mildred’s car wound up in someone else’s yard that day.
