Location of This Minnesota Stater Home
Darfur is a small town located in Watonwan County, Minnesota. It is a quiet, rural community with a population of just a few dozen residents. The town is surrounded by farmland, which is typical of the region, and it has a strong sense of local identity and community, despite its small size.
Origin of the Name “Darfur”
The name “Darfur” was given to the town by a local settler, John Helling, who had read about the Darfur region in Sudan, Africa. The Darfur region in Sudan was known for its distinctive cultural and historical significance. Helling, for reasons not fully documented, decided to name the Minnesota town after this distant region. It was not uncommon during the period of westward expansion in the United States for settlers to name new communities after places they had read about or had some personal interest in.
Darfur, Minnesota, like many small towns in the Midwest, developed primarily as an agricultural community, with farming and related activities being the mainstay of the local economy. The town’s history is marked by the settlement of European immigrants who came to the area to farm and build a new life in the American Midwest
