c.1940 Home For Sale in Hickman, KY Under $47K
Such an adorable cottage! It sits on a corner lot with some views in Hickman (pop. 2,395), a small town nestled under and over the bluffs of the Mississippi River in the far western part of Kentucky. I was surprised to see that the house is 2,424 sq ft. The size is deceiving from the exterior. Love the hardwood floors and all the natural light.
Another thing that is deceiving is the town’s history. Mark Twain once called Hickman “The Most Beautiful Town On The Mississippi.” That was before the 1908 lynching of David Walker, his wife and four children, after Walker was accused of inappropriate language with a white woman. The Kentucky governor at the time denounced the heinous murders and put out a $500 reward. Today, Hickman has put resolved to put that behind them to become a town that exemplifies the best of the South with a crime rate 96% lower than the national average. It is also home to the last remaining ferry that crosses the Mississippi.
