Family History

This was the home of Walter J. Dombrowski (1890-1956) and his wife Agnes Olsheski Dombrowski (1892-1966) in the 1930s and ’40s. Walter was a Polish immigrant who arrived in the U.S. in 1902 and became employed as a coal miner in the anthracite fields in Shamokin. They lived in this home with their eight children Nicklas, Stanley, Joseph, Francis, Clara, Andrew, Anthony, and Frank.  Per the 1930 U.S. Census, the eldest boy boy was sent to work in the coal mines before the age of 18, and the next two boys, ages 17 and 15, left school to work as store clerks.

In 1930, the home was valued at $4,000.
