Here is a cheap house in California with two bedrooms, one bath, a porch, one-car detached garage, and central air and heat.  The home is located in the Mojave Desert in the Searles Valley, which has a population of about 1,500 people. This community is actually called Pioneer Point, which is just a short distance from Trona.

Although the 2019 earthquake caused many businesses, including the Dollar Store, liquor store and pharmacy, to close down due to building damage, a new high school is under construction. The old one received earthquake damage. For amenities, residents travel to Ridgecrest, about a 30 minute drive.

Water can be an issue in this area. A $75 monthly fee is charged for water and sewer in addition to whatever usage amount a homeowner incurs. You get 60 days to pay, even if you use zero water, before a lien is placed upon the house. Many of the abandoned homes in the town therefore have liens on them according to a water spokesperson. The only way to stop the monthly $75 charge is to disconnect and cap the pipes. That costs money, and could cost over $10,000 if a homeowner wanted them uncapped again.
