Cheap-ish Circa 1950 Kansas Lustron Home For Sale – Sold

OHU50K Notes    $79,000 Reduced to $69,000 Sold

Lustron home for sale! Love it when we come across one! This one is somewhat over our $75K mark, but I couldn’t wait to feature it.

The prefab, enameled steel, Lustron homes were introduced in 1948 in response to the need of housing after WWII. Our featured home today is the blue two-bedroom Westchester model. The Westchester is easily recognized  by its notched porch outside of the living room. You can date the Westchester design by the bedroom windows. The earliest homes had pairs of small slit windows set high on the wall. In 1949 and 1950, they changed to the larger single window design that this home has.
In most cases, like our featured home, the foundation was a basic concrete slab. Windows were casement with aluminum sashes, and the skeleton framing of the house was steel. Porcelain steel panels formed the siding, interior walls and roof. The Westchester’s exterior came in four colors: surf blue, dove gray, maize yellow and desert tan.
Lustron homes like this one sold from the factory for about $7,500. By the time a foundation, erection costs and other fees were added, the total could amount to $10,000. At a time when similar-sized frames homes were going for $6,500 complete, $10K seemed a high price to pay for a small, plain looking house. Although about 2,500 Lustron homes were sold, the company soon folded.

This two bedroom, one bath Lustron Home offers a good-sized living room opening to a dining area with a pass through to the kitchen. It is centrally located in a great walking neighborhood, near a park and just north of the State Fair grounds. Lustron houses are prefabricated porcelain-coated stainless steel houses inside and out, considered to be low-maintenance and extremely durable, and were delivered in thousands of pieces to the site for assembly. Quite a few are on the National Historic Register. Consider this slice of post WWII Americana as a unique investment income opportunity. All 986 square feet are laid out for efficiency and this one boasts an updated shower/bathtub surround, new hot water heater, a humidifier added to furnace and a metal roof replacement plus 15#” insulation added. The garage is a two car detached with a large room in the back. Waste water line replacement from house to main line.

I dislike the kitchen and bathroom upgrade…they blocked the bathroom window with a shower unit, really? Colors in the kitchen clash, should have chosen maybe a blue/gray countertop and same for flooring to match the cabinetry.
