History

Atchison, Kansas, is said to be the most haunted city in the state. A local historian has a theory why.  Atchison it is mainly built out of limestone which is porous and can supposedly house spirits, also allowing them to move around freely.

Family History

Per meaww.com,

“Adam Dilgert, a German immigrant who arrived in Atchison somewhere in the late 1850s, was the town’s first contractor and stonemason. He was very well-respected and practically laid the foundation for the community. He had a limestone quarry and is accredited for most of the town’s infrastructures built between 1866 and 1894.

He built a modest home for his family — his wife Mary and daughter Barbara — in 1880. His great-niece Frances also lived there. There were additions made to the house in 1895 and 1905, respectively. Keli and Rob Adams bought the house in 2014 and began renovations on the house to restore it to its former self.”

Hauntings

A brother and sister purchased the old home in a neglected state and hired contractors to restore it. Many of the contractors quit after complaining about hearing footsteps and viewing ghostly apparitions. The basement seems to be the epicenter of the paranormal activity. Workers found old calvary boots beneath the floor boards in the basement, perhaps once owned by Dilgert who served in the Civil War. After the discovery, things began to heat up, literally and figuratively, in the house. Forces in the basement seemed angry, even pulling on people who went down there, causing their bodies to get warm and tingly.

Apparently, the top floor is haunted by the harmless spirits of Mary, Barbara, Mary and Adam Dilgert.  It should be noted that Adam accidentally killed his brother, Ferdinand, and he could also be haunting the place. Seven presences were reported in all. You can read more here.

I don’t think I’d have an issue with the basement, I’d just figure it was a hot flash! But, spirits know I can feel/hear/see them, and tend to flock to me, so I’d end up screaming all the time, “I JUST WANT SOME ALONE TIME! GO TO THE LIGHT, AND BUG OFF!”

If you put the boys back where you found them under the stairs leading to the basement a lot of this will stop. His brother isn’t angry with him he knows it wasn’t anyone’s fault. You’ve all kept such beautiful care of the house. You’ll just have to wash clothes upstairs is all. For some reason the basement wasn’t meant to ever be disturbed. We would love to come up some time and visit. You’re both very artistic and handy. The house is just beautiful!
