Salt Flat Ghost Town’s History

In 1928, Edwin Hammack learned that a new highway was planned to pass through this area, so he built a store and gas station which opened in 1929 when traffic began to flow through. Salt mining in the flats then became a more profitable business. Salt Flat reached its peak population in the early 1960s with about 125 residents,. After the salt deposits dwindled, the population dwindled to 35 in the 1970s. Today, even less people and a few mostly abandoned buildings comprise Salt Flat.
