Family History
This home was once owned by Dr. Thompson Eldridge Potter (1849-1916), one of St. Joseph’s foremost physician and surgeons who later went on to become a founder of The Central Medical College in St. Joseph and so much more! Potter Hall at Missouri Western State University has named the facility for Art, Music and Theatre, Cinema and Dance after the famous Dr. Potter.
Dr. Potter married Mary Barn Bassett (1855-1944) in 1876 and built this home for his bride and young children in 1886. They raised their 11 children here, Mary, Hessa, Ena, Thompson, Bertha, Llyod, Caryl, Catherine and Frances. and two more. Caryl went on to become a doctor himself.
After Thompson passed away in 1916, his widow Mary continued to live in the home with three of her 60-something daughters (two who never married) until her death in 1944.

Other families have lived there. Don’t know how long it’s been empty.
