Town History

The town was originally called Henderson. It was changed to Knoxille in 1832 and was most likely named after James Knox, a prominent citizen. With a population of about 2,900 residents, the town lies just southeast of the City of Galesburg. A public square is located in the middle of town with historic buildings surrounding it including Knox County’s first courthouse, city hall, the Ball log cabin, the town gallows.
