History

This was the home of Ella Sumner who married the much older Edgar B. Schermerhorn (1851-1923) in this house in 1919. E.B., or Ed as he was known, was the wealthiest and most prominent citizen of Galena, as well as the President of Citizens Bank. He came to Galena as a youth with just 50 cents in his pocket. You can read his story of rags to riches at Find-A-Grave. After the couple wed, they moved into a much grander home. Sadly, after just four years of marriage, Ella died at age 45, and Ed passed away just two weeks later at age 71.
