History
Long before a public school system was formed, churches provided the three “Rs” of education to students, and schooling among frontier children in the early 1800s was minimal at best. Families lived far apart and children were needed to help with farm work, making it difficult to gather students for more than a couple of months during the year.
When one-room schoolhouses were finally built around Stroudsburg, instruction was often taught in both English and German by teachers with little or no formal training.
I couldn’t find much history about this specific schoolhouse, except that is was built in 1902. The large, brick Clearview Elementary school a few doors down appears to have been built in the 1930s, so perhaps our tiny school was the original Clearview School.

This is the “Boise” one room school house that served the Stroudsburg area before Clearview Elementary School was built. After Clearview was built it served as extra space during the 1940s. My father James Arndt taught sixth grade classes there before WW2 started.
