Robert W. Reader had this home built built for his wife, Martha Wallace Reader, and their children, Robert, Mary, Fred and Anna. Robert and Martha married in 1884, and the couple saved up money from Robert’s job as an iron moulder in an iron foundry to purchase the property with a down payment. In 10 year’s time, they had the mortgage paid off, likely with help from the three youngest kids, a fireman, and two nurses, who still lived in the home with their parents as adults well into the 1920s.
