Family History
In the 1930s to the early 1940s, George and Maria Joseph Thorne rented the home. They lived there with their daughters, Florence, Helen and Susan. In 1940, Maria, a maid at a hotel, was the only one working. Perhaps George had a hard time finding a job as he only had a second grade education. Both she and George, however, were born in England and became naturalized US citizens in 1940.
By 1944, Marion and Gladys Paul had purchased the home and lived there with their children, Richard, Joyce, Arnold, Arlene and David. That same year, Arnold, who was age eight at the time, was hospitalized with facial and leg burns after playing with gasoline. His dad, Marion, supported the large family as a milling machine operator at a typewriter factory.
