Family History

What came first, the chicken or the egg? In this case, the brick store was built first by J.T. Benz (1877-1936)  in March 1922.  By July 1922, this house was nearly completed which he owned free and clear and was valued at $4,500 in 1930, the equivalent of $79,000 today.

J.T., of German descent, ran  a grocery store out of the brick building and was also a jeweler. He lived here with his wife, Sarah Emily, and five children, Muri, Julian, Alma, Vera, Ruth.  Sarah Emily was active in her church and was especially interested in the education of her children, especially the musical education of her daughters. He died in the home in 1936 after a lengthy illness, and Sarah Emily died three years later.  It appears that daughter Alma inherited the grocery store. She died in 1999.
