Town History

Clinton was founded in 1829 and was named for DeWitt Clinton, governor of New York from 1817 to 1823. A majority of the town’s original settlers were immigrants working in coal mines, mainly from Italy, Austria and Scotland. At least 77 percent of the Italians came from the northern regions of Italy, in contrast to the majority of southern Italian immigrants who came to America as a whole during this same time period. While the coal mining industry in Clinton ended, many of the Italian settlers remained in Clinton.
