Town History
Borger, Texas (pop. 13,251), has a rather interesting history.
After the discovery of oil in 1926, Ace Borger and John Miller purchased a 240-acre townsite near the Canadian River. Within a few months, the site became a boomtown luring 45,000 residents to the area’s black gold, Texas tea.
With all the oilmen, prospectors, panhandlers, and fortune seekers came gamblers, prostitutes, bootleggers, and drug dealers, so much so that the town became known as “Booger Town.” City government soon came under control of an organized crime syndicate. Murder and mayhem became an everyday occurrence, along with the formation of a “red light district.” There was even a shoot out in the post office. Borger became so notorious that in 1927 the Texas Governor sent the Texas Rangers to rein in the city, led by Captains Frank Hamer and Thomas Hickman, who later gained infamy for killing Bonnie and Clyde.
After the Great Depression, the price of oil dropped and things quieted down in Borger. Today, the city is a significant shipping hub for agricultural and petroleum products.
