In 1901, the railroad built a construction camp originally called Ragtown. The camp soon became known as “Six Shooter Siding,” due to numerous gunfights. After the community grew into a permanent settlement, it was renamed Tucumcari in 1908, taken from the name of the nearby Tucumcari Mountain.
Old U.S. Route 66 runs through the centerof Tucumcari. Numerous vintage motels and restaurants constructed in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s are still in business along the famous route in town. You can fins more than 50 mural in the city, too, painted as tourist attractions.
