History

This is the Gilchrist House on Lingleston Road in Lower Paxton Township, one of the oldest, dating back to the 1740s, in the township. Originally, Dauphin County was part of Lancaster County, and the Gilchrist family had a significant presence there.

James Gilchrist:

In 1737, James Gilchrist was granted a warrant deed for a farm in Paxton Township and built a stone and log cabin house along what is now Linglestown Road in the 1740s.

John Gilchrist Jr.:

A descendant of a family that arrived in Pennsylvania in the early 18th century, John Gilchrist Jr. was a Revolutionary War officer. He married Margaret Cowden in 1752 and is buried in Paxtang. Another son of James Gilchrist also fought in the Revolutionary War.

Matthew Gilchrist:
The son of John and Margaret, Matthew Gilchrist, was born in 1755 and had a large family with Elizabeth Crouch, including children like William Gilchrist and John Gilchrist.
