OHU50K NOTES

How about a fixer upper on two acres in the small town of Prairie Home, Missouri (pop. 280)? Gotta love that name. It refers to the town’s scenic setting on the prairie.

Prairie Home Historical Tidbit

Prairie Home is the hometown of Marion Hedgepeth (1856-1909), the wild west outlaw also known as the Handsome Bandit and the Debonair Bandit. The six-foot Marion ran away from Prairie Home at the age of 15, became a cowboy and had robbed trains and killed as far west as California by age 20.

He and his gang, including his wife, loved to hole up in prestigious quarters and dress extremely well. Despite his respectable appearance, however, he was a ruthless killer and one of the fastest guns in the west.

After being pursued by the Pinkertons for a train robbery, Marion served time in the Missouri State Penitentiary. It was here that he ratted on former cellmate H.H. Holmes. (If you haven’t read Devil in the White City, you must). His information eventually resulted in the capture, conviction and execution of the notorious Holmes, and also resulted in Marion’s pardon by Missouri state governor Joseph W. Folk. By this time Marion had contracted tuberculosis and looked like a skeleton.

During a botched Chicago saloon robbery in December of 1909, Marion was shot and killed by police officer Edward Jaburek. Fascinating stuff.
