Family History

Very interesting family history behind this home. Frank Burris (1887-1970) purchased the home sometime before 1929. Frank was a clerk for the railroad, and he and his wife, Georgia Rebecca Gerald Burris (1895-1976), raised their four children in the home, Virginia, Nellie, Emmet and Jessie.

The Burris family spent a harrowing 18 months not knowing what had happened to their son, Airman Cpl. Emmet F. Burris, after he was reported missing in action over Austria during a  1943 Christmas mission during WWII.  He was an Aerial gunner with the 15th Air Force in Italy who by 1943 had served six combat missions before being shot down on his seventh mission.

It wasn’t until liberations in June 1945 that the family was made aware that Emmet was alive. His B-24 Liberator bomber plane, of which he was a ball gunner, had been shot down over Austria by the Germans on Christmas Day, and was he held as a prisoner of war for more than a year.

The June 1945 newspaper article explained, “His plane was hit and exploded, blowing him and two other members of the crew out. Except for the three, and two others who managed to bail out of the burning plane, the remainder of the crew were killed. He said he finally got his parachute open before he hit the ground. ”

He received the Purple Heart.
