Fun Friday – The Haydenville “Roundhouse Mansion”
We need some entertainment after seeing tons of dropped ceilings and peeling laminate floors, so Old Houses Under Under $50k introduced Fun Friday a while back. It is a collection of weird old structures, usually NOT for sale, simply of interest. Today we visit the “Roundhouse Mansion.”
History
Roundhouse Mansion is located in Haydenville, Ohio, a small town which billed itself as “the last company town in Ohio.”
Peter Hayden, a businessman from Columbus, Ohio, purchased the settlement, then known as Hocking Furnace, in 1853, and renamed it Haydenville. Hayden was known a friendly man and a great boss who treated his workers well.
He built workers houses, the United Methodist Church (1893), shops and businesses from the company he formed using nearby clay deposits.

The Haydenville Mining and Manufacturing Company was directly across the road from where the Roundhouse now stands, and Hayden loved to show off his products by using the bricks, blocks, pipes and tiles in buildings all across the company-owned town.

The Roundhouse Mansion was built in 1911 and was registered as a national landmark in 1973. The unique structure is constructed of silo tiles.
Haydenville Mining And Manufacturing Company folded in 1957, and the houses were sold to the town, then to individual owners. 120 of them were placed on the National Historic Register.
The Roundhouse Mansion became the private residence of three generations of the Smith family. The third Smith generation passed away a few years back.
The newer owners had plans to convert the Roundhouse into a hostel. Some work was completed, but it never really got off the ground.
