OHU50K Notes $150,000
Windber Mansion For Sale! We first featured the Windber Mansion back in August 2020 when it was selling for $79,900. The c.1920 Colonial Revival has extraordinary woodwork, built-ins, inlaid floors, and gorgeous fireplace mantels. With its two apartments, the home has a total of nine bedrooms, 4.5 baths, 4,311 square feet. Now priced at $150,000, the house looks worse for wear than it did in 2020. It has a fascinating family history, however, which you can see, along with the 2020 listing pics, at the second half of the page.

OHU50K NOTES
Save this old house. It is full of history!
Architecture
Located on a corner lot in the Windber Historic District, this fixer upper is known as the Geddes House. It is a Colonial Revival with corner pilasters, wide frieze board, Palladian windows, a full-length porch with grouped square columns. Per the NRHP snippet below, the home was built on The Hill, an exclusive residential neighborhood of the prominent citizens of Windber. You can see an old drawing of Windber and #1401 Somerset’s location at the bottom of this post.
Family History
This was the home of William Tecumseh Geddes. William (1865-1924) was known as The Builder of Windber. He owned the Windber and Johnstown Lumber Companies, and in fact this house was built by the Winder Lumber Company. William was also a Mason, railroad bridge builder, building contractor, coal mine owner, and was appointed Postmaster of Windber, Pennsylvania, by President Theodore Roosevelt in December 1901.
William was married three times. His first wife, Sarah Jane Moore, died in 1911, then soon after in 1912, he married Ruby Duncan. That marriage appears to have ended in divorce. William married Zelda Fay Fury Howe just before he died in February of 1924.
William had two children, William Tecumseh Geddes (1913-200) and Ruth Geddes (1894-1915). Ruth died at the young age of 19 in a tragic automobile accident in Johnstown, PA.
More recently, the Di Battista family has owned the home.
