This Canton, Mississippi, beauty is known as the Harvey House and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the East Canton Historic District, a rich collection of varied architectural styles reflecting trends in American architecture from 1835 to 1940.
Built in 1900, this was the home of lawyer George Harvey (1843-1921), his wife Rebecca and children George Jr. and Lyons. The home was passed down to George Jr. where he lived with his wife Patty, children Patty and George, and a servant for decades.
My research seems to indicate that George Sr. was the brother of Captain Addison Harvey (1837-1865) who fought in the Confederate Army’s Harvey’s Scouts, in 1862 joining Wirt Adams Regiment of Mississippi Cavalry. Harvey attracted the attention of Adams and was frequently detached on secret expeditions.
According to MSGW.org, “The Scouts followed the Confederate Army in the disastrous march to Nashville and after its retreat, took the trail of Wilson on his famous raid through Alabama to Columbus, Georgia, where the brave Captain Harvey was murdered. The Captain came up to the man as he was in the act of stealing one of the Scout’s horses and ordered his arrest. The man broke out into abusive language and Captain Harvey knocked him down with his pistol. Not long afterwards, finding Capt. Harvey alone, he slipped up behind him and shot Harvey through the head. Harvey died instantaneously.
Thus perished by the hands of an assassin, one who had passed unscathed trough a hundred combats, a hero and patriot, a man whose military genius seemed like inspiration and yet never neglected any precaution to ensure success.”
Captain Harvey was buried at Columbus, Georgia, but was re-interred in Canton, Mississippi’s cemetery in 1886 where he lays to rest with his family members including his brother, the original owner of this home.
