New York State has the fastest-growing Amish population and is the fifth-largest overall in the US. Over 21,000 Amish live in the state in 59 settlements, and Mayville is one of them. The settlement at Mayville was stated in 1976 by Amish from New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. The settlement has two church districts. Like the Amish at New Wilmington, these Mayville Amish (known as Byler Amish) usually are distinguished by their brown-topped buggies.
