Details
Since I am in town (on vacation to see our kids), I took a short ride to see this home. It needs a lot of work, but the prices in this area are shooting through the roof, and plenty of jobs are to be found. The home offers wide plank wood floors and a few vintage lighting fixtures. In addition to its condition, the home’s main drawbacks are its closeness to the road and its location a stone’s throw away from the Seagram’s distillery plant.
Distillery History
Actually, the plant was purchased from Seagram by MGP, but began life as the Rossville Union Distillery in 1847. After Prohibition, it was purchased by Seagram in 1933. Right next door was Squibb, which opened in 1846, before that the c.1807 Dunn and Ludlow. Schenley opened in the Squibb plant in 1933.
Family History
I say all this, because I believe the realtor’s build date of 1900 is off the mark. The buildings look earlier, and I believe they would have been homes built by the Rossville Union distillery for workers. In fact, per the 1910 US Census, the house was owned by Edward Fink. He worked in the cooper shop making barrels for the distillery and lived here with his wife Emma, a laundress, daughter Annette, at age 15 working as stenographer for a jewelry shop, and young son Edward.
