If you like privacy, this fixer upper is plunked on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere in Belvue, Kansas (pop. 205).
It is amazing how so many country schoolhouses were literally in the middle of nowhere. Where did all the children live?
Anyway, this old building was the District 34 Wells Creek one-room schoolhouse. The county’s first school district was created in 1859, and by 1900 the county had expanded to 88 districts. All the rural districts, like District 34, had only one schoolhouse and one teacher for all the grades.
By the 1930s rural districts, however, were experiencing declining enrollment numbers. At the same time, Kansas had almost 10,000 school districts statewide, and so they implemented consolidation. Shortly following World War II, one-room schools in Kansas would soon be a thing of the past.

The main level has 1060 square feet of finished living space consisting of a living room, kitchen, bath and laundry room. The upper level has 371 square feet of living space featuring 2 bedrooms and a bath. The basement has 960 square feet of unfinished space.
The exterior has vinyl siding and a covered front porch. The roof on the main portion of the house is galvanized metal. The front porch and room on the back of the dwelling have asphalt composition roofing. The property also has a 30 x 24 detached garage.
