Today we are featuring the John and Lucinda Sivey House in West Wabash Historic District, Indiana, also known as the Sivey-Tyer House.

 

 

 

Family History

Sivey Family

Located on a corner lot on a terraced yard surrounded by a hoop and spear iron fence is the Sivey House. Built in the late 1850s,  John Calhoun Sivey (1818-1887) and his wife Lucinda Hepner Sivey (1823-1890) came to Wabash County from Virginia in the 1840 as two of the area’s early pioneers. After a few years operating a business in Lagro, Mr. Sivey started studying law in 1848 and was chosen clerk of Wabash County Circuit Court, a position he held for 11 years.

 

As well as studying law, Sivey was a land agent best known today for having his name attached to two real estate plats within the district. The couple lived in this home with their children, Juliet, Jennie, Nellie, Flossie, Emma and Lucy.

 

 

Tyler Family

In 1862, John and Lucinda sold the house to John B. Tyer (1827-1914) and his wife Sarah Anne Forst Tyer (1835-1915). Mr. Tyer also was an early settler of Wabash County and served as constable for many years. In 1876, the Tyers sold the house to their daughter Mary and her husband, Edward B. Clark. From 1900 on to about the year 2000, the home was rented to tenants and suffered unfortunate alterations, as seen in the c.1996 photo below.

 

 

House Timeline

1850s

The 1850s Gothic Revival house is unique in that vertical board and batten siding was not common in Indiana at the time.  The front gable featured carved bargeboards, an elaborate jigsaw balustrade, and delicate trim. The doorway with transom and sidelights was a cary-over from Greek Revival architecture. Louvered shutters originally occurred at all the windows.

 

 

1900

In the early 199s, the house still retained its beautiful exterior details, including the shutters.

 

1996

By the mid 1900s, the house was clad is asbestos siding. Fortunately, around 1982, the asbestos was removed to uncover the vertical siding. Sadly, by this time, the shutters, bargeboard, elaborate balustrade and delicate trim had all been removed.

Today

Happily, the Sivey-Tyer House has seen a restoration. The shutters are still missing, but the home stands proud again on its landscaped corner lot in the West Wabash Historic District.
