History

The property is located in Sulphur Well in the Edmonton zip code. In fact, it is located just a four minute drive down the road to the town’s namesake. In 1832, Ezekiel Neal began purchasing acreage along the South Fork in Metcalfe County and began digging a well in 1845 with a hand and horse powered drill, eventually hitting water at 180 feet. Neal’s hope was to hit a salt well, as one had been dug nearby and was making money for the owner. Disappointingly, Neal’s well was not a salt well. After being analyzed, the well was found to contain sulphur, magnesium, salt and iron. Neal used this to his advantage, however, as this mineral combination was thought to cure stomach problems and nervous disorders. Neal’s sulphur well has flowed water continually since 1845.
