Fixer Upper Second Empire
OHU50K NOTES
Here is a real estate auction for a c.1885 fixer upper Second Empire in Windsor, New York, a quaint village known for its ski resorts. I am thinking a B&B for skiers, fall foliage enthusiasts and antique hunters might be a good use for this home.
Family History
My fondness for a house always grows exponentially when I discover that its history includes a family who owned it for decades. In this case, the Darling/Waller family owned it for almost 90 years from its build date of 1885 to the 1970s, maybe even the 1980s.
Henry Darling (1831-1891) was a farmer who built this home fin 1885 for his wife Amanda (1836-1929) and his children, Lionel, Hattie and Nellie. Amanda found Henry unconscious in the property’s barn, and he passed away the next day. The widow continued to live in the home, as the 1900 US Census shows her residing with her youngest daughter Nellie (1868-1949) and her husband, William Henry Waller.
William Henry Waller (1860-1937) worked making whips in his younger days, but eventually became an engineer. He and Nellie had one son, Donald Darling Waller (1905-1980). After Nellie died in the home in 1949 at the age of 85, the house was inherited by Donald and his wife Olga Cower Waller (1910-1995).
Donald was a meter tester and the couple had three children, Darlene, Bruce and Sandra. I am rather disappointed in Donald, because despite naming his oldest daughter Darlene, he did not like his middle name (the family name of Darling), so he changed it to Ross. As a genealogist, I find that disrespectful to his grandparents, especially since he inherited their home.
In 1968 tragedy struck the family when Bruce Waller died at the young age of 35 leaving behind a wife and three young children. Donald and Olga continued to live in the home.

I had grown up in the village and had my eyes on it since running by during cross county and track practice. It was meant to be and we cannot wait to finish raising our teen in this amazing home, that is long overdue for a family 🫶
