Recently Sold Old Houses and What They Sold For ~ June 19, 2020 Edition

The hardest part of maintaining this site is keeping up with all the recently sold old houses. I have used this expression before, but these old homes really go like hotcakes. These are all homes that were featured on Old Houses Under $50K, and with this latest bunch, you might be surprised at a couple of the drastic price reductions. I know I was.

2210 Conewango Ave, Warren, PA 16365   $44,900

OHU50K NOTES

By the looks of the bedroom mural, the owner may have have packed his bags, left on a jet plane to Florida, and vacated this c.1945 fixer upper ranch to be the home to a new family who learns for some acreage in a colder climate. Located in Warren, Pennsylvania, the 2.32 acre property sits on a wooded knoll overlooking lush green hills and the Conewango Creek.

OHU50K NOTES

Today is our Sunday special where we feature properties over $50k but less than $100K.

I sometimes have a tug of war with myself over what type properties to showcase. OHU50K originally was created to showcase old homes with lovely original details. Over time, however, I’ve had many requests for investment properties and homes with acreage. Properties with both architectural integrity and acreage are hard to find at bargain prices, but this c.1910 Virginia farmhouse on 3.21 acres just may fit the bill.

This beautiful property had been pending, but is now an active listing again.

Mountain views, a creek, a second smaller home, outbuildings and a pasture for horses, PLUS a tidy Virginia farmhouse with hardwood floors, country kitchen, and original doors, trim and staircase are included at the bargain price of $79,900. I especially love Dr. Grubbs office with the green metal roof and original gingerbread. After a little research, I found out that Dr. Andrew Bayne Grubb was born in neighboring Grayson County in 1886 (my son lives there), died in Cripple Creek in 1959 and is buried in Cripple Creek’s Fleming Church Cemetery. He and his wife Hallie raised five children here and were said to have hundreds of tried and true friends in the community.

The native stone really adds visual interest to the exterior of this c.1910 move-in ready bungalow in Battle Creek, Michigan. With its hardwood floors, natural woodwork and built-ins, the interior imparts character, too.

OHU50K NOTES

Save this old house. It sure is a fixer upper,  but redeemable. With a $10K price tag, I was surprised to see still intact a fireplace mantel with tile, lovely staircase, vintage kitchen cupboards, hardwood floors and natural woodwork.

The home is located in a low-crime, working class neighborhood of Cambridge, Ohio. Cambridge is well-know for its “S” shaped bridges and Cambridge Glass. In fact, the home is just a short walk to the National Museum of Cambridge Glass.

OHU50K NOTES

If you were driving down W. 5th Street in Elmira, New York, this fixer upper is one of those houses that would make your head swivel. You’d see green hills in the distance and the castle-like towers of the esteemed Elmira College across the street and wonder why such a beautiful home looks so forlorn.

I love the arches in the gables and the small balcony, and the interior has plenty of original features to work with, too. Someone could restore the home to its former glory and rent out a room to a college student.

OHU50K NOTES

Save this old house, a house that has loads of stories to tell. The c.1850 Italianate was the home of Jonathan McGee Wilson (1813-1895) his wife Betsy Durfee and children Thomas, Willie and Emma. Jonathan came to the area when he was 12-years-old with his pioneer parents who originally built a humble log cabin nearby. His mother Rachel loved to spin yarn and made all their clothes while his dad farmed the land and ultimately built up a comfortable farming operation.

Jonathan, as the only child, helped his parents on the farm until at the age of 21, he purchased his own 15 acres. Eventually his farm counted 300 acres with a dairy of 65 to 100 cows. He also carried on his father’s trades as currier, tanner and shoemaker.

According to the Biographical Review of Madison County – 1894, Wilson’s c.1850 Italianate once was the “handsomest home in the village.” I sure hope someone has the vision and cash to save this old house.

Large Victorian home located just off of Route 46 south of Oneida. This home needs a total renovation but could be a gem with the right owner. Large rooms, high ceilings and some of the original woodwork remains. Complete renovation would be needed including fire damaged section. Could be very nice farmette with just over 3.5 acres, barn and additional outbuilding.

125 State Highway 83 N, Defuniak Springs, FL 32433   $50,000 ~ Sold for $38,000

OHU50K NOTES

In celebration of National Historic Month, OHU50K is featuring this c.1918 fixer upper. We showcase it not so much for any architectural history or outstanding features, but because it is in De Funiak Springs, Florida.
The small city of De Funiak Springs, voted the Best Small Town in Florida in 2019,  centers around its circular lake. With a population of about 6,000 resident, it is a close-knit community located about an hour’s drive north of the beaches of Pensacola.
Although our home today is a simple bungalow, De Funiak Springs is known for its historic Victorian homes. You will see turrets, sleeping porches, classic fluted columns, gingerbread fretwork and wrap-around porches on the fabulous houses that rest on Circle Drive, the heart of DeFuniak Springs. Our featured bungalow is in walking distance to Circle Drive.
In April 2020, the median list price of homes in the city was $169.9K, trending up 3.3% year-over-year, and the median sales price was $148K. The median listing price per square foot was $117. This is one of the three cheapest homes on the market currently in De Funiak Springs. If the price can be negotiated some, the house is a small enough project in a gem of a city and might be a good investment.

13 Fellows St, Unadilla, NY 13849    $57,900 Sold for $57,900

13

OHU50K NOTES

If my father-in-law was still alive, he would have us trekking up to Unadilla to check out this sweet c.1860 home with owner financing. Unadilla and Bainbridge were two of his favorite upstate New York villages. And no wonder. Unadilla is chock full of history and wonderful architecture.

This home is located on a tree-lined street of smaller older homes in the Unadilla Village Historic District. With the glaring exception of Second Empire, most of the popular American architectural styles of the day are represented in the district.

Crime is virtually none, taxes are low for New York, and except for the occasional flooding of the Susquehanna River (and cold winters of course), Unadilla is a good place to call home.
