252 W Summit St, Alliance, OH 44601 $75,000 Sold for $73,000
OHU50K NOTES
The interior of c.1906 move-in home in Alliance, Ohio, lifts one’s spirit with its bright, sunlit rooms. I know natural woodwork is preferred, but the white looks sharp, clean, and cheery in this application.
Vintage steel kitchen cabinetry and black and white bathroom floors are some of my favorite features of this move-in ready home.

6661 Devils Lake Hwy, Manitou Beach, MI 49253 $49,900Sold for $30,000
OHU50K NOTES
This fixer upper in the Irish Hills of Michigan needs substantial work. The building looks like it was once a service station or store, but the property provides a chance to get in on the ground floor of the Manitou Beach at Devil’s Lake revitalization project. Developers aim to create a year-round resort and artist community with restaurants, shops, galleries, lodging, and recreation.
The property is across the street from the lake, and with a restoration, the property has the potential to become a vacation rental.

1201 NE Madison Ave, Peoria, IL 61603 $35,000Sold for $30,000
OHU50K NOTES
Someone had attempted to save this old house. They updated the wiring and breaker box, installed two new furnaces, updated the bathroom and replaced some of the plumbing with pex. Then the pipes burst, flooding the first floor. That’s why much of it is gutted.
The home is located on a corner lot on a tree-lined street of some lovely older homes. Although crime is an issue, the brick beauty does deserve a new life. I hope someone will save this old house.

Save this old house. Large home with so much potential!
Two new furnaces (one in the attic for upper level/attic & one in basement for basement/main level). Upstairs bathroom new tile floor and walls, main floor powder room new tile floor. Entire home rewired with new breaker box.
Basement was an apartment, and could be finished to be one again.
Radiant heaters burst causing flooding, so main level has been gutted and is ready for new floor and drywall. Most of the plumbing has been removed…some has been replaced with pex. Large attic could be finished for a master suite, play area, or anything you want it to be. Build some quick equity in this one. Home sold as-is.

424 W College St, Albert Lea, MN 56007 $19,550 Sold for $12,000
OHU50K NOTES
This c. 1883 fixer upper is located in Albert Lea, Minnesota (pop. 18,016), about 90 miles south of the Twin Cities. If you love water, the town is in the midst of several lakes.
I was curious about the unusual town name and found it was named after Albert Miller Lea, a topographer with the United States Dragoons. Captain Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone, was the scout for Lea’s unit.
House History
I was only able to go back as far as 1930 when Jens Christiansen, a state highway maintenance man, lived here with his wife Emma and sons Earl and Elmer. The family owned a radio set, and the house was worth $3,000, approximately $46,300 in today’s dollars. According to the 1940 US Census, the Christensen family was still living in the house at that time, along with two boarders.
The US Census records as far back as 1880 indicate that Albert Lea was filled with immigrants from Denmark and Norway, many with the last name of Christensen. I don’t know if he was an ancestor to our Jens Christensen, but a Jens Christensen was one of the original officers of the town. Another Jens Christensen was tried for selling liquor to a minor in 1883, the year this house was built.

127 S Haines Ave, Alliance, OH 44601 $34,500 Sold for $30,000
OHU50K NOTES
Alliance
Alliance has a rich social, industrial, railroad and architectural history. The town has several historic structures of note including, the restored Glamorgan Castle, former home of the owner of Morgan Engineering; the Haines House, a restored underground railroad house; and the Mabel Hartzell historic home. The Richardsonian Romanesque stone house of the Devine family is being renovated, and Alliance’s historic downtown area is undergoing a gradual renaissance.
FYI: For cat lover’s, the Feline Historical Museum opened recently, the first cat museum in the United States.
