127 S Haines Ave, Alliance, OH 44601     $34,500 Sold for $30,000

OHU50K NOTES

This well-built old house was built in 1907 and boasts original woodwork as well as beautiful windows. Did you notice the unique wrap-around window? The home sits on a corner lot in a neighborhood of similar older homes in Alliance, Ohio.

Alliance

Alliance has a rich social, industrial, railroad and architectural history.  The town has several historic structures of note including, the restored Glamorgan Castle, former home of the owner of Morgan Engineering; the Haines House, a restored underground railroad house; and the Mabel Hartzell historic home. The Richardsonian Romanesque stone house of the Devine family is being renovated, and Alliance’s historic downtown area is undergoing a gradual renaissance.

FYI: For cat lover’s, the  Feline Historical Museum opened recently, the first cat museum in the United States.

223 S Howell St, Rocky Mount, NC 27804       $25,000 Sold for $41,050223 S Howell St, Rocky Mount, NC 27804

OHU50K NOTES

Well, as far as I ‘m concerned, this fixer upper is well worth the $25K smackers. Just look at those floors, the long central hallway, the high ceilings, multiple mantels, original lighting fixtures and, of course, that fabulous floor-to-ceiling cupboard in the butler’s pantry.
So why so cheap? Among other things, the house is located in Rocky Mount, not in the worse neighborhood, but not good either. Rocky Mount can be rough.

803 Park Ave, Johnstown, PA 15902   $23,999 Sold for $20,000

OHU50K NOTES

Save this old house. I was attracted to this fixer upper because it looks exactly like the first house we owned in Bayshore, NY. Our featured home today is located in the Moxham Historic District of Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
The Moxham Historic District includes 330 contributing and 34 non-contributing structures, including architecturally pleasing homes, old carriage houses and horse barns, vernacular houses and church buildings mainly dating from 1890-1930. The neighborhood was built in a relatively flood-free area, and the infamous 1889 Johnstown Flood resulted in little physical damage to properties in Moxham.
Unfortunately, the historic neighborhood has gained a reputation for crime in recent years. When we purchased our Bayshore house in the 1980s, the surrounding neighborhood was in decline. Today, however, the houses in the now low-crime Bayshore neighborhood are well-maintained and sell between $300K – $400K. It only takes a few individuals to start a change.

400 E 7th St, Anniston, AL 36207     $38,000 Sold for $38,000

OHU50K NOTES

I am partial to yellow houses, so for me, this fixer upper bungalow has curb appeal. I admire the broad front porch, front facing gable and brick foundation.
What is not to be admired is the neighborhood’s dismal crime stats. The tip-off is when the realtor calls a listing a “great investment property.” Alabama property taxes are the second lowest in the country, however, so that’s a plus. Another plus, is the well-maintained older homes on the street.
