I have ties to Sciacca. My paternal grandfather, Calogero, came over from Sciacca as a child with his mother and four brothers. Two older brothers were already settled in Brooklyn, but Calogero’s father and sister decided to take a later ship for some reason. Sadly, when my great-grandmother Caterina arrived in New York five months pregnant and accompanied by five children, she was “excluded from landing on account of having left her husband in Sicily.” Although, my ancestors had family in New York who vouched for them, officials believed that such women might become burdens of the state. While awaiting my great-grandfather’s delayed arrival, Caterina became ill and was taken from the Barge Office at Ellis Island, where she was detained, to Long Island Hospital. She died there a week later at the age of 35 from complications of her pregnancy.

I was always into into family history, but I really got big into genealogy after my kids got older. (That is why I spend way too much time on some of these old houses trying to research their family histories. Their stories fascinate me.) I wish I had known of Caterina before my child-bearing days were over. I would have named a daughter after her.

A trip to Sciacca is on my bucket list.

There also good connections to the main towns of Agrigento, Sciacca, Palermo.
We are 35 minutes away from the Verdura Golf resort of Sir Rocco Forte:
We are only 20 mins drive away from the spectacular Sicani Mountains and its picnic area.
