Family History

Per the 1880 US Census, this was the home of Joseph Penn (1828-1900). Joseph was a retired farmer who lived in the home with his second wife, Susan, and adult children John and William.  Joseph was one of the wealthiest men in the county at the time. Before moving to this home, Joseph had a farm in St. Clair. Upon his death in 1900, the home was left to his wife and son John. John was a successful real estate man, but he passed away in 1915. Caroline continued to live in the home until her death in 1946. Crazy, but the household member to live longest in the home was the Penn family’s servant, Sophia Schweickert. She was their live-in servant from 1880 to 1946.
