OHU50K has so many unique properties to share today on Under $100K Sunday.
This c.1780 log cabin for sale outside of Warrenton, North Carolina, has seen so much history from pioneer days, to Revolutionary War, Civil War and beyond. It is a project for sure, but it certainly deserves to be preserved by someone who will do a correct period restoration.
Located near the Virginia border, the house is situated on Wallace Paschall Road. I couldn’t find much on the house itself, but the road, and the small community itself, was named in honor of Wallace Taylor Paschall. Paschall (1877-1955) was born in Warren County, North Carolina, and owned a large farming operation across the road from our featured log cabin.
From what I can gather from genealogical and church accounts, the community’s name was originally Merry Mount. A large population of black families lived on the Paschall Farm, raising crops of tobacco and cotton. In return they paid Paschall half of their earnings. Merry Mount’s name was changed to Paschall Station in 1929.
Paschall’s niece, Nancy Vernon, fondly remembers riding the horses her uncle kept in the stable to the left of his house (see below). He also had a Concord grape orchard in his back yard, a watermelon garden and smokehouse behind the main house from which Nancy was given a ham on occasion. Tenant farm worker houses, which no longer stand, lined a dirt road to the rear of the house.
