c.1870 Fixer Upper Italianate in Port Byron, NY Under $40K

OHU50K NOTES

Until it was rerouted, Port Byron was an important Erie Canal Town.  In fact, the canal ran just a block from our featured home at one time. You can see it on the 1904 plat map next to the red “X.” This c.1870 Italianate with cupola was once a true beauty. According to the 1870 U.S. Census, the home was worth $6,000, quite a sum back then.

It appears that it was owned by John L. Davis (1836-1914), a successful cigar manufacturer. He lived here with his children, Charles, Adeline, Caroline, Stella Mary, Erwin, Lena and Samuel, and his wife Mary (1841-1875) until she passed away giving birth to Samuel.  A year later, Mr. Davis married Sevilla R. Randall Davis (1837-1906). He outlived both his wives, but he would be turning over in his grave if he saw the current condition of his beloved family home. FYI: The red square on the house warns firefighters and others about hazardous conditions before entering.
