Best, this once lovely Italianate remained in the same family for almost 50 years before a local doctor purchased the house, tacking on an unfortunate massive rear addition.  Preservation North Carolina, performed surgery on the house, removing the monstrous addition as well as completing stabilization of the home. The house offers several notable features, including Corinthian columns that splits its huge living room in half, lovely stained-glass windows, and wood floors.

The M.J. Best House is an important Victorian structure on a spacious downtown lot. Damage done by previous owners has left this home as a shell primed for a new addition at the rear and smaller, gracious front porch. The loss of this home will be detrimental to the historic district and Preservation North Carolina’s ongoing neighborhood revitalization efforts.

 

 

Preservation North Carolina has made extensive repairs and replacement of the foundation, removed incompatible later additions of poor construction, installed new roof framing and asphalt shingles on the rear of the house, and installed the foundation for a more appropriately-sized and historically accurate front porch, plus a two-story rear addition.

 

 

 

The property has been condemned by the city since 2006.  We are seeking a buyer who will be able to address the immediate needs of its rehabilitation.  Contact us if you or someone you know is interested in purchasing this diamond in the rough.  The buyer will need to show capacity for at least $100,000 in addition to the purchase price in order to stabilize the exterior.
