OHU50K NOTES

Save this old house. Located on a large corner lot, the interior is not as bad as the exterior might indicate. Built-ins, hardwood floors, high ceilings, beadboard, mantels and original doors and trim are still intact.

Family History

The realtor states that the home was built by Dr. Benjamin L. Norwood (1866-1940) in 1920. The date is incorrect. According to the 1981 South Carolina Historic Properties Record, the home dates back to 1895. Dr. Norwood lived here in 1920 with his wife Mary (aka Mamie) and children James, Mary and Elizabeth. The couple and their youngest daughter still resided there in 1930, but upon the doctor’s death in 1940 the remaining family members lived elsewhere in town. Dr. Norwood was a practicing physician for 53 years and served 41 years as a deacon at his Baptist Church.

Architecture

This is a one and a half story home with hipped roof with cross gable. The wrap-around porch has a hipped roof and is supported by tapered columns. There are two corbelled interior chimneys. A National Geodetic marker at the property indicates that the lot is the highest point in town. In the 1981 photo below, the house still looked in good shape.
