Town History
Sigourney was founded in 1844 when S.A. James constructed the first cabin there. After other families began to settle in the area, the town was named by county commissioner Dr. George H. Stone after the popular poet of the day Lydia Sigourney. A large oil-painted portrait of the poet still graces the foyer of the county courthouse.
