Vernon E. Gregory built the home in 1908 and lived here until his death in 1944. When Vernon married the widow Jennie Lawson King in 1914 he was a garage mechanic.

Jennie must have been very happy to have this new home. She had suffered much in the last four years before marrying Vernon. Her first husband, Edmund King, died in 1910 at the age of 41. Then her oldest son passed away in 1912 at age 20.

Vernon seems to have been a kind, responsible man. Jennie not only brought herself and two younger sons into the Pine Street household, but her elderly mother as well. Vernon supported his instant family for many years on his meager salary as a garage mechanic before becoming the town tax collector.

Can’t you imagine Jennie toiling in her kitchen? Baking bread? Making homemade soup?Canning? I bet she would be saddened to see her domain look so grimy now. I imagine the boys had a great time taking their fishing poles down to the river, too. Perhaps Jennie fried up their catch on an old cast iron stove.
