Per the 1920 US Census, the home was owned by William F. McCarthy, an electrician, and later the president of the Gypsum by McCarthy, a building supply farm.  He lived here with his wife Martha Murphy McCarthy (aka May) and their young daughters Kathleen and Laura, William’s sister Florence McCarthy, and his aunt Sarah Payne, a nurse.

May was a force of nature. Born in Syracuse in 1919, she was raised on the then prestigious W. Genesee Street. After graduating from Central High School,  she attended the College of St. Elizabeth in New Jersey, and completed graduate work at both the University of Buffalo and George Washington University. She returned to #Syracuse and became a social worker with Catholic Charities. May was lauded for her work bringing homeless European children to America after WWII, and in the 1950s relocating refugees during the Hungarian revolution.
