OHU50K NOTES

This amazing c.1876 Second Empire/Gothic Revival home is a contributing house in  the Clinton-Columbia Historic District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It went under contract before I could even get it posted, but it is too fabulous not to feature it anyway!

Early Family History

The mansion was built in 1876 for Lorenzo Webber (1817-1884)  and his wife Jane Welch Webber. Mr. Webber climbed the ladder first by buying a farm, then dry goods, lumber, milling and tanning business. In 1867 he became part owner of the Bloss Coal Mining and railroad Company, and after that became successful in real estate and banking. He also served in the New York State Legislature for two years.
Sometime before 1898, the addition was built when Webber’s daughter Adele and her husband Stephen C. Gray lived there.  Mr. Gray ran his real estate office from this address.

Latter-Day History

The house was rented out as apartments for decades until it was purchased for $157k in 2005. The current owners live elsewhere in Elmira, a charming college town, working to restore it. A new roof,  heating, plumbing and electrical work has been performed, but they now need a new buyer to take over the reins.  You can see more pics of “The Castle” on Architecture of Elmira, NY Facebook page.

Tried the Facebook link several times, but page stated “This page can’t be reached …link may be broken.” (I’m using Google Chrome)

Also, this Castle is amazing! I hope some one or some group bring this beauty back to it’s original luxurious state. The craftsmanship of the fireplaces, stairs, woodwork, windows, etc., are beyond exceptional. If only they built like that today…and if only I could afford such a build.

My God, this castle is astounding, like something out of Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence. I wish I could travel back in time and visit in its heyday. I hope whoever restores it will erect a wrought iron fence. It looks odd without that frame.

Do the new owners who restore places like this, ever give us hopefuls a peek into their restorations?? I would love to see this when it is fully restored. What an amazing architectural marvel!! The wavy walls in that one room are incredible! The woodwork when it is cleaned properly will just glow.
Please let us know how it goes.
