Historic Converted Trolley Car Vacation Getaway in Reading PA $15K ~ OFF MARKET
February 26, 2020
2-C Cottage Ln, Reading, PA 19605 $15,000 OFF MARKET
Here is a unique vacation getaway for you; an old trolley car converted into a bungalow. OHU50K featured this fun vacation option back in December, and, unbelievably, it is still on the market. The realtor’s build date of 1960 must be referring to the addition, however, because Reading’s last trolley reached the end of the line in 1952.
Some history I researched: Reading Street Railway Co. began its 78-year history in 1874 with horse-drawn cars. When the city’s population reached 60,000 residents in 1890, the trolleys were electrified. They were operated by two persons – a motorman, or driver, and a conductor until 1948, and usually had seating for 44 passengers. By the 1940s, buses were 4 cents cheaper to ride, and the trolleys could no longer compete. In fact, the slow moving vehicles had become driving impediments for buses and automobiles.
As they rusted in peace, the old trolley cars were sold off for use as restaurants, antique shops, etc. There does not appear to be too many left. This one, No. 182, a single truck Brill, is a delightful cabin steps from Maiden Creek and with a semi-private fishing dock.
If you are seeking a peaceful vacation getaway that is minutes away, look no further. This quaint bungalow is located minutes north of Reading. The stress will melt away as you realize that you are approaching a vintage and historical former local trolley car that has been renovated and updated to provide a full bathroom, kitchenette and living quarters. This property is steps from the peaceful and meandering Maiden Creek. It features a semi-private fishing dock on the creek. Activities include fishing, swimming kayaking, and simply floating on the creek! Note that this property is purely a seasonal recreational cabin/ Year round residency is not permitted in the community.
