OHU50K NOTES

Despite this c.1924 Upper Peninsula bungalow needing some work, I am not calling it a fixer upper. The interior has been untouched by time, and I hope it stays that way! Call me crazy, but except for the kitchen floor, I would not change a thing. Where have you seen a house at this price point with all these original features? I am amazed. Sink, built-ins, lighting fixtures, fireplace, swinging kitchen door, upgraded mechanicals, low-crime neighborhood, and a player piano ~ WOW!

Ironwood is called the Western Gateway to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and is about 18 miles south of Lake Superior.

400 North St, Lykens, PA 17048     $49,900 ~ Off Market

OHU50K NOTES

It’s a handyman special that needs a bit of TLC, but low crime, the view of the mountains, wrap-around porch, beautiful woodwork, French doors, built-ins and that amazing floor-to ceiling kitchen cupboard are enticing.

Lykens, a thriving mining town of nearly 3,000 people in 1900, has seen a decline in recent years and now has a population of 1,779. On the bright side, Lykens residents may attend Harrisburg Area Community College for less than $1,700 for a 12-credit semester.

Domfront, Orne, Lower Normandy, France $49,061

OHU50K NOTES

How about a riverside fixer upper stone cottage in lower Normandy in France? In my late teens, I had dreams of a house like this. In fact, I took seven years of French and after high school attended a school in England in hopes of becoming a bi-lingual secretary. Now I can barely read French, never mind speak it. I also now have no aspirations to live anywhere other than the US. But it is interesting to browse.

This pretty riverside fixer upper cottage is near a very popular medieval town. The property would benefit from further modernization and finishing.  It is situated at the end of a no through road in a small hamlet and would have been part of a mill complex in the past.  It would make an ideal holiday home.

The property is in a quiet residential position on the outskirts of the medieval market town of Domfront with shops, schools and all amenities.  Also nearby, is Lassay-les-Chateaux (13km), with its picturesque castle and lake and Bagnoles de l’Orne, about 22km away, is a spa resort set around a lake with a casino, many restaurants and shops. The nearest mainline train station is at Flers (30km) with the TGV at Laval (52km) and airport and ferry are at Caen Carpiquet (76km).  Rennes airport is also within easy reach (98km).

OHU50K NOTES

This c.1907 fixer upper in low-crime Freeport, Pennsylvania, has such a soothing interior and boasts so many interior elements. The staircase, amazing mantels, built-ins, stained glass and arched doorways name a few. I love the front door enframement, too.

I couldn’t find much historical background about it, except I believe that the Laux family lived in it in the 1970s. Their daughter was a Freeport High School Girls Varsity Basketball star.

Fixer upper in need of a cosmetic renovation. Make it your own house or flip it! Tons of potential with this great floor plan. The electric and heat is on so you can see the mechanics are functioning. This house has great bones. It just needs someone that can come in and put the finishing touches on it. This house has potential for home owners or investors. Property being sold as-is.

4403 Cottage Ave, Saint Louis, MO 63113   $18,200 ~ Sold

OHU50K NOTES

This move-in ready brick shotgun house is located in The Ville Neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. The owners of this home appear to be one of the last holdouts to remain in the high crime area. It is such a shame, because The Ville was once a lovely neighborhood of the city’s black middle class. While Cottage Avenue has well-maintained homes like this one, the street is also pockmarked by vacant lots. Crumbling homes and other conditions vary widely from block to block.

If only we could transplant the house. Its exterior boasts a brick facade with curb appeal. The interior’s original front door and lighting fixture, hardwood floors, pocket doors, fireplace, and clawfoot tub leave one with a sense of sadness that they will may likely eventually become dust as so many of the homes on this block have done.

400 W Main-Ferris, Carthage, IL 62321     $46,000 ~ Off Market

OHU50K NOTES

Located in a small village outside of Carthage, Illinois, with little more than a post office and a smattering of houses, this fixer upper farmhouse has many of its original interior elements still intact. The staircase, pocket floors, stained glass and hardwood floors are lovely, although the kitchen is depressing and there are no pics of the bathrooms. Something, though, attracts me to the rusty old barn set against the cornfield.

2406 Putnam St, Toledo, OH 43620   $8,888 ~ Sold

Screen Shot 2020-01-12 at 4.19.56 PM

OHU50K NOTES

If this fixer upper could talk, I bet it would tell us such a sad story of riches to rags. A well-to-do family must have built this home, with its wrap-around porch, sleeping porch and gable cutout. Although the mantel is gone, the tiles are still intact, as well as pocket doors, lovely staircase, hardwood floors and vintage kitchen.

Of course, with a house at this price point, expect major systems repairs/replacements, and don’t expect a good neighborhood. It is not the worst Toledo neighborhood as far as crime goes, but not the best either.

6 Church St, Lumber City, GA 31549    $50,000 ~ Pending

OHU50K NOTES

This historic fixer upper home sits on a street of older homes, opposite the pretty white Methodist Church in Lumber City, Georgia. The home has so much character and is an ideal home for an old house lover to restore. It is located in a low-crime neighborhood, boasts many original elements we love, and has a rich history. The home is one of three sister houses in a row, the Italianate Triplets.

All three houses are of the same style and design, most definitely the work of one builder. The Italianate style is not typical in this part of Georgia, so to see three in a row is a rare treat. It was originally thought that these homes were built for three daughters of legendary steamboat and first mayor of Lumber City Captain John L. Day.  Later research concluded that Captain Day only sired one daughter. The Day’s residence was behind these houses, however, and he did indeed own them as rental homes at the time of his death in 1906. Matt Cook (1859-1919) is currently credited as  the builder. He was a merchant and served as one of six councilmen under Mayor Day.

Captain Day chose Lumber City as the base of his substantial steamboat operations due to its central location. Ironically, both Day’s father and brother, who were also in the steamboating business, drowned in two separate steamboat accidents. Neither could swim.

As well as being a successful businessman and mayor, Captain Day was a prominent lay member of Lumber City Methodist Church (see photo below), donating large sums to further the cause of Christianity.

Are you looking to own a piece of history? If so, this Victorian fixer upper home may just be what you are looking for. The classic home was built in 1903 and has many of the original features in great condition. The beautiful staircase, wood door with porcelain knobs, claw foot tubs in 2 baths (one is a full tub the other is a three-quarter tub). The upstairs hardwood floor is in great shape just needs to be repainted or stripped down to original. The lower level has had flooring added over the hardwood. The tongue and groove ceilings found throughout the home bring back the true beauty the home once betrayed. The exterior boosts the ornate trim found under the original wood framed windows and the front entrance.
