OHU50K NOTES

A third go-round for this fixer upper that has been reduced again! The c.1851 Greek Revival is situated on 1.73 Acres between two lovely churches in Sandy Creek, New York. In fact, the builder of this house, William E. Howlett, built the Methodist Church that sits next door to the right. Howlett was a master builder who constructed a number of buildings in Sandy Creek.

Pitt M. Newton (1825-1897), a prominent merchant and civic leader, lived in this house with his wife Huldah Mathews and their children Ellen, Cora, Clarence, Harlan, Flora Belle, Herbert, Arthur and Earl. Mr. Newton and his wife’s father, Levi Mathews (1805-1889) were partners at the general store in town.

175 S Second Ave, Middleport, OH 45760     $49,900Pending ~ Sold

OHU50K NOTES

I don’t know why this historic home shows no photos of the kitchen, but the rest of this c.1852 brick home looks lovely, especially for under $50K.
Known as the Van Duyn Place, it is one of the oldest homes in Middleport. The land on which it sits was originally owned by the founder of Middleport, Benjamin Smith. Smith’s daughter, Elizabeth, married Dr. W.B. Van Duyn, and they built a log cabin on two lots. It is said that Johnny Appleseed often spent the night at the home as he planted apple trees in Middleport and throughout southern Ohio. The current home was built in 1852.

74 E Oneida St, Oswego, NY 13126             $33,000 Reduced to $30,360Pending ~ Off Market

OHU50K NOTES

I love the front door of this c.1900 foreclosure in Oswego, NY! You need such a vestibule in a cold-climate city like Oswego on Lake Ontario where the cold winds and snow blows. Weatherman Al Roker graduated from SUNY Oswego in 1976, and he sure received a lot of meteorological experience living in this climate.

The house needs work. Although the newell post is gorgeous, it looks like all the staircase balusters are missing. Original elements, including hardwood floors, lighting fixtures, bullseye molding, beadboard wainscoting, floor-to-ceiling kitchen cupboard, bay windows and stunning fireplace mantel, are still intact, though.

22 Main St, Dixfield, ME 04224

OHU50K NOTES

This sweet fixer upper is just dripping with deliciousness! The home was built in Dixfield, Maine, in 1856. We call the architectural design of this Gothic Revival a connected farm complex. The design originated in England and Wales and evolved in New England so that owners could carry out chores free from harsh winter weather.
The home sits near the center of town. As you can see from the 2018 photo below, the house was most recently employed as an antique shop. There was a lot of stuff there, some I would have liked myself.

REALTOR COMMENTS

This fixer upper could be your dream home with a little sweat equity. This New England style home has a great in-town lot with almost a half acre of land. This home does need a full renovation but has great bones and an amazing layout.
On the first floor you have a kitchen, dining room, living room, and one bedroom. The second floor has three additional bedrooms and one bath. The attached barn has two floors of storage and one garage door for vehicle access.

409 S Main St, Warren, AR 71671     $50,000 Off Market

OHU50K NOTES

Save this old house. Built around 1900, this fixer upper Colonial Revival sits at the edge of a commercial district. That and the condition of the home contribute to the low price. The original elements are so worth saving, though. This has the potential to be a real beauty.
Warren, AR (6,003) is a lovely deep South town with a commercial historic district, long summers and very mild winters.
The home needs a savior to enjoy some sweet tea in its sunroom, play croquet with the grandkids on the wide lawn and get plenty of exercise climbing that beautiful staircase every day.

REALTOR COMMENTS

Save this old house. Calling all the Chip and Joanna’s out there! THIS is someone’s dream property! Bed and Breakfast, Personal Home or AirBnb….let your imagination run wild. Built in the late 1800’s early 1900’s, this stunning home is just waiting for someone to love it and bring it back to life! The detail in the molding, mantles and trim are breathtaking. From the winding staircase, original wood floors, walls of windows and cedar closets with built-ins, CHARACTER abounds! Too many assets to mention. Needs WORK!

Screen Shot 2020-07-24 at 2.02.43 PM

OHU50K NOTES

This sweet old church for sale is located in a pretty setting in Farmington, WV (pop.375). Farmington is probably best known for the 1968 Farmington Mine Disaster, but the area is also home to lush green scenic landscapes.
The realtor states the build date for the church is 1970, but it should be immediately evident that that date is incorrect. The church, known as the East Run Church, was built before utilities and running water were required for church structures, so a build date is more likely before the turn of the century. It appears that at some time during the building’s history, children were taught at the one-room schoolhouse across the street. Thanks to reader Mr. McKenzie for finding the correct Google Map coordinates and the street view of the old schoolhouse.

REALTOR COMMENTS

Level lot with vacant church for sale on the property. Church measurement approximate. No utilities, no running water. Creek behind property. Located in Farmington, tax map says Mannington.

REALTOR COMMENTS

Save this old house. Second Empire Victorian fixer upper… suffers from severe water and structural damage originating from a leaking roof. Roof rafters, 3rd floor joists and 2nd floor joist damage. Once featured in a book entitled ? America?s Painted Ladies? pages 48 and 49. Historically it is priceless having been built in 1860 by a master cabinet maker/ undertaker David H. White for Captain Charles Harris.

There is also a hidden room off the dining room said to have been a stop for the Underground Railroad for transporting slaves to freedom.? ( the railroad tracks are about 400 feet from the rear of the house) According to the book. Sits on 2.5 acres.
