The top 10 old houses under $50K were difficult to assemble this month, because so may of our featured homes are already pending. I don’t usually include those, but I had to include the Saint Louis home. It is just too spectacular to neglect as one of the top 10 old houses under $50K.

Although there are nine historic districts in Meridian, Mississippi, this fixer upper is not located in any of them, so no worries about restrictions. It is, however, situated on a 1.8 acre city lot that runs from one street to the next.
You have to love the double front doors with stained glass transom. I thought it might be easy to trace the home’s history since the “C” in the glass gave a big clue. I was wrong. The earliest I could trace the home was the 1990s when C.W. Culpepper lived here with other Culpepper family members. I would like to think that the home was handed down through the Culpepper family.
In addition to the home, I think the brick outbuilding on the property might be a great project.

This fixer upper Italianate in Eaton, Ohio (pop. 8,407) was home to Abner Tyrell, a stock broker and later county treasurer, and his wife Lois, a homemaker. Their son, William Tyrell (1918-1987) was born and lived there his entire life. He was the couple’s only child. William’s law practice was also housed in the home.

After William’s death in 1987, the house eventually became a duplex, and, sadly,  the original grand staircase prevalent in Italianates was modified and enclosed. Plenty of original interior and exterior features still remain, however, as you can see by the photos.
