You have to love the double front doors with stained glass transom. I thought it might be easy to trace the home’s history since the “C” in the glass gave a big clue. I was wrong. The earliest I could trace the home was the 1990s when C.W. Culpepper lived here with other Culpepper family members. I would like to think that the home was handed down through the Culpepper family.

In addition to the home, I think the brick outbuilding on the property might be a great project.

This old fixer upper farmhouse first attracted me because of its yellow exterior. I find yellow houses to exude friendliness and happiness, if you can attach human qualities to a house. This c.1914 move-in ready home sits on a pleasant street of very similar houses lined up like soldiers. Although the exterior of the homes are alike, I bet very few have original interiors that compare to this one.

Not only is the original woodwork in excellent shape, but the original kitchen boasts a floor-to-ceiling cupboard and amazing sink that sets my heart aflutter. Add a vintage stove, get rid of the cheap cabinet and drop ceiling and we can almost think we are back in 1914.

Word of advice. I am a sucker for old sinks and clawfoot tubs, but I do have to say, on a practical level, they stink. My husband salvaged a sink like the one in this house and installed it the free-standing kitchen of our c.1915 foursquare. I had him move the refrigerator to the pantry room, and purchased a 1929 Quality gas stove. With seven children and no dishwasher to spoil “the look”, we went too far in restoring an original kitchen. The sink was much too shallow to wash more than four dinner plates at a time, never mind pots and pans, and the oven in the stove wasn’t even large enough to fit a turkey or even a good size cookie sheet.

The built-ins and the grill that exposes the enclosed staircase are beautiful. The house needs a bit of TLC, but is ready to move your antiques right in.

This fixer upper Italianate in Eaton, Ohio (pop. 8,407) was home to Abner Tyrell, a stock broker and later county treasurer, and his wife Lois, a homemaker. Their son, William Tyrell (1918-1987) was born and lived there his entire life. He was the couple’s only child. William’s law practice was also housed in the home.

After William’s death in 1987, the house eventually became a duplex, and, sadly, the original grand staircase prevalent in Italianates was modified and enclosed. Plenty of original interior and exterior features still remain, however, as you can see by the photos.

The house sits on a large corner lot surrounded by yards and yards of coveted cast iron fencing. Unfortunately, the neighborhood, while low crime, is not very attractive.
