OHU50K NOTES
This hobby farm for sale boasts a Greek Revival home on five acres in Heuvelton, New York. Unfortunately, the homestead has changed considerably since it was built in the 1850s. The interior of the Greek Revival has been stripped of most of its 1850’s character. Portions of the house, outbuildings and fencing have also gone by the wayside over the decades. The home’s history, however, can never be stripped away.
History
Otis C. Jillson (1807-1888) was the son of Levin Jillson, carpenter and farmer, who emigrated to New York state from Rhode Island in 1795. Otis worked on his dad’s pioneer farm until at the age of 18 he began a three-year apprenticeship as a currier and tanner. Realizing these endeavors would not bring him the success he yearned for, Otis purchased a farm.
He worked hard until in 1852, Otis was able to purchase the land (203 acres) on which our featured house now sits on just five of those acres. It was here that he built his enviable homestead. He was married to Lucretia Halliday in 1829 with whom he sired eight children before she died in 1849. It was with his second wife, Betsy Willard, and their daughter, Adelaide, who lived in this home. Otis reached great success as a farmer who owned and used the first mower and reaper in the community, as well as a man of integrity and religious convictions.
