OHU50K NOTES

This move-in ready home is a beauty built in 1870 in Bradford, Illinois (pop. 758). I was intrigued as to why this home is called The Counterfeit Home, but I couldn’t come up with anything. If anyone has information, I’d love to hear about it.

Bradford History

In the mid-1800s Maine native, Bradford Foster, took note that veterans of the War of 1812 were all entitled to a bonus. That bonus was a deed to a quarter section of undeveloped land in central Illinois. Foster then began buying up these large parcels from the veterans for a pittance, sometimes for only $50 to $100. By 1850, Foster persuaded family and friends to move to the area, now named Bradford.
